In the space of just a few decades the people carrier and MPV class has been born, reached feverish popularity, and settled into being one of the most practical and versatile cars on the market.
The people carrier car class is a relatively recent addition to the car market, and because of this, it's still evolving and improving. The earliest people carriers and MPVs were large, ungainly workhorses that did little more than provide space for large, growing families. But more recently, a number of dynamic engines and body shapes have brought more variation than ever before. Practicality, however, remains the people carriers' primary selling point. There are a number of excellent used people carriers on the market that offer practicality as well great prices. Ranging from the smaller five-seaters to impressively compact seven or even 10-seaters, there are people carriers for all family sizes and needs. But versatility and clever design are a feature of many – especially the larger cars – with moveable and removable seats that provide almost endless interior configurations, This makes such cars not just excellent carriers of people, but carriers of goods, too. If you're looking at people carriers on the smaller end of the scale, it could be worth considering a large family car, or even a crossover SUV. But for sheer practicality and versatility, there is nothing on offer than can better an excellent second hand people carrier.
People carriers are designed for one prime purpose and that’s to carry people. While this might suggest that there isn't a great deal of variation in the market, there is in fact, quite a wide selection. Size is of course, a key consideration. There are smaller options only slightly bigger than a large hatchback that offer comfort for five people, as well as large 10-seat options. Although billed as 10-seaters, realistically, the biggest MPV you can expect to find will seat seven adults and store some luggage. The smaller options offer low cost practicality and excellent cabin space. Thanks to good reliability, buying a second hand people carrier is an excellent way to find a bargain. Due to their use as solid family vehicles however, some can run the risk of being unloved. Make sure that when you're buying a used people carrier you do a thorough check, especially of all interiors and use the free AA Cars history check.
Having decided on the size of vehicle you need, perhaps the next consideration should be running costs. These are large vehicles and are likely to cost more to run so you’ll need to find a compromise between that and the additional practicality they afford. Is the cabin large enough and do the seats fold away to provide room for awkward objects if you need the car to carry such things? And if yes, are the doors designed in such a way that you can actually get them in? The cabin may be big, but is there sufficient individual storage space such as cubbyholes and under-seat storage for things like children's toys? These size-related issues are important to consider when buying. If you're going to be transporting children around on long journeys you will also need to think about in-car equipment. Climate control is a useful addition but it’s worth making sure that heating / cooling makes travel comfortable for all passengers given the large cabin size. At the higher end of the scale, DVD players, handheld games consoles and power sockets all provide distraction for passengers on long drives. With your passengers occupied you can turn your attention to yourself and the drive. Although some can be bulky, people carriers can offer an exciting drive, too. Cars like the Ford C-Max, which shares much of its core engineering with the Ford Focus, is crisp and dynamic on the road. If you make sure to look out for these things when buying a used people carrier, you will be sure to find an excellent car, perfect for you and your family.
