VW launches BlueMotion brand

Volkswagen has announced a summer launch for BlueMotion, a brand which will represent "the most efficient and economical vehicle in each of Volkswagen’s car ranges".

The brand will make its debut on the Polo and will be expanded to cover the Passat at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

According to Volkswagen, the application of BlueMotion to the Polo will improve gearing, create a fuel consumption figure of over 72mpg and facilitate carbon emissions of 102g/km.

At the heart of this vehicle will be a 1.4-litre, three-cylinder TDI engine with an electronically controlled, high-pressure direct injection.

There are also a range of external modifications that improve aerodynamics, including a front bumper below a redesigned grille, intended to reduce drag, and a rear spoiler mounted on the rear window to flatten airflow.

A set of 14-inch Jerez tyres have also been fitted on the Polo BlueMotion, which reduce rolling resistance and help keep the vehicle’s weight down to 1,084kg.

There is a focus on efficiency with this vehicle but it will remain a "usable everyday car", with the ability to accelerate from 0-62mph in 12.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 109mph.
