VW Passat Estate named top tower

The Volkswagen Passat Estate TDI 4Motion has been named the overall winner of the inaugural Towcar Awards 2007, judged by What Car?, Practical Caravan an the Camping and Caravanning Club.

A total of 50 cars were tested for the award, with such aspects as towing ability, practicality, value for money, performance when not towing and safety all taken into consideration.

While the Passat was the overall winner, the VW Golf TDI Match, Volvo V70, Audi Allroad Quattro Tiptronic and Land Rover Discovery HSE Auto also triumphed in their respective weight categories.

The Kia Rio was also recommended as the best ‘budget buy’, while the Land Rover Freelander was tipped as the best compact 4×4.

Steve Fowler, editor of What Car?, said: "After five days of intensive testing, the Volkswagen Passat Estate emerged as a clear winner.

"It makes great sense whatever you’re towing, but just as crucial are its abilities in everyday driving and the fact that it’s a sound ownership proposition."
