Re-‘tyred’ name makes new return

A special edition of the Volkeswagen Golf GTI is available to be ordered
with first models arriving in June. Called the Pirelli, after the
distinctive wheels, the last time a Golf GTI had the name Pirelli was 25
years previously.

Introduced in May 1983, the original GTI Pirelli was based on the MkI
Golf and featured the distinctive Pirelli ‘P’ 13-inch alloy wheels. The
2008 version sports five-spoke 18-inch versions fitted, appropriately,
with a set of 225/40 R18 Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

The 2008 Mk V Golf GTI Pirelli is available in three colours – reflex
silver, diamond black and blue graphite.

The interior features a half leather seat, inset with an
especially designed cloth which appears to form the pattern of a
tyre-tread.

The 2.0-litre T-FSI engine has had its’ output raised from the standard
200 PS to 230 PS, and either driven through a six-speed manual or the
twin-clutch DSG gearbox.
