Three Skoda models make Top Gear list

Skoda has been voted the top manufacturer of 2006 by respondents to a poll in Top Gear magazine, with its Octavia, Fabia and Superb all making the list of top ten cars.

The Octavia was described as "a masterpiece of dependability" and was voted into third place in the owner satisfaction survey.

One spot behind was the Fabia, while the Superb was named the seventh best car of 2006. The performance of these models contributed to Skoda’s overall victory as last year’s best manufacturer.

Number one spot in the survey was claimed by the Honda S2000 for the third year running, but Top Gear praised Skoda for challenging the recent dominance of Japanese manufacturers in such surveys.

A spokesperson for the magazine said: "It’s a stunning achievement by the Czech manufacturer to break the Japanese monopoly at the top of the table – particularly to overhaul the domination of Lexus – and just reward for a decade of producing spot-on cars that press exactly the right buttons for its owners. Let us toast Skoda."

Other cars to feature in the top ten list for 2006 included the Honda Jazz, the Fiat Panda, the Mazda MX-5 and the Jaguar XK.

The opinions of more than 56,000 Top Gear readers were canvassed for the study, with 152 cars overall being rated.
