Skoda celebrates 20th birthday

Czech automobile manufacturer Skoda is celebrating a 20th birthday this month, with July 1st the official anniversary of the first Favorit model being produced.

Named the Skoda 781 at the pre-launch stage, the Favorit was launched six months later as the company’s first front-wheel-drive car.

Some 42 patents were registered as contributing to the vehicle’s design, including Porsche, which worked to ensure acoustics and vibrations parameters.

Production of the Favorit was scheduled to stop in 1990, but the popularity kept it going until 1994 and eventually totalling 783,163 vehicles.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer is now responsible for a number of different models which many UK drivers choose for their next car.

Current Skodas include the Superb and Octavia.
