Former F1 driver: ‘The right man won the championship’

Former Formula One driver Martin Donnelly has expressed relief that "the right man won the championship".

Donnelly, who raced for Arrows and then Lotus in the late 1980s, has taken a keen interest as the dramatic events of this season have unfolded.

The Ulsterman told Crash.net Radio that he believed nerves and the rain played a vital part in the title-deciding Brazilian Grand Prix race.

He said: "For the majority of the race everybody did a good job, but then of course the rain came again at the end and Massa was faultless.

"Lewis got involved in a few little scraps, but he came through. Whether or not Toyota made the right call, whether or not [Timo] Glock made a few mistakes in other corners on that last lap we don’t know."

Donnelly suffered a terrible crash during qualifying at the Jerez circuit in 1990 when he was ejected from his car, with his seat still attached to his back.

He is currently working as driver development director at Comtec Racing as well as instructing on Lotus trackdays.
