F1 circuit is hotting up

The Losail International Circuit motorcycle racing track is about to
undergo a refurbishment that would upgrade it with a view to being put
forward as an F1 venue.

The current 5.4 kilometre track in Doha, Qatar is surrounded by
artificial grass to prevent the neighbouring desert sands encroaching
onto the track.

Nasser Khalifa al-Attiyah, Qatar motor and motorcycling federation
president, said: "We are planning a massive upgrade of the Losail
circuit to make it possible to host Formula One races when the time
comes.

"We will be shortly inviting tenders for the job and once we decide on
whom to award the contract, work will start soon."

If Qatar achieves F1 Grand Prix status it will join the already popular
Bahrain Grand Prix on the list, as well as the one in Abu Dhabi, which
will host its first Grand Prix in 2009.
