David Coulthard has given his backing to Lewis Hamilton ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next month, saying a win there could be the "icing on the cake" of what has already been an incredible season for the McLaren driver.
Coulthard himself was the last British driver to win a grand prix in the UK back in 2000 and he suggested that fans will be eager to see a performance from Hamilton following his wins in Canada and the US.
"Expectations are high and he’s got to be one of the favourites to win," the Scotsman said. "With so much history attached to motorsport in the UK, it’s fair and reasonable to expect a British driver to win it.
"It would be fantastic if Lewis did do it. He certainly has the best opportunity to do so, and it would be the icing on the cake of a very short career."
The next race in the Formula One calendar is the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours before the convoy rolls into Silverstone on July 8th.
Whatever happens in France, however, Hamilton will be in joint first position at least once the British race gets underway, as he currently leads his teammate Fernando Alonso by ten championship points.
