Luxury car brand Porsche are offering their Panamera Gran Turismo as a plug-in hybrid for the first time. The Panamera S E-Hybrid offers 416hp, with 95 hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery that can be recharged in four hours. Fuel economy on the new the four door, four seater sports car is up to 91 mpg and 0-62mph is an extremely respectable 5.5 seconds. Top speed is an impressive 168mph.
In testing, the electric driving range of the Panamera S E-Hybrid was 22 miles (when AC and heating are deactivated) but it is thought to range from 11-22. The Panamera S E-Hybrid can reach speeds of up to 84 mph in all-electric operation. The parallel full hybrid concept developed by Porsche also offers ‘coasting’ as, at top speed, the internal combustion engine is cut off to save on emissions. Rather cleverly, a smart phone app measure charge levels, tells the driver about remaining driving range and even guides them back to where they are parked.
The new Panamera has more pronounced contours and newly-shaped body elements. There’s Bi-Xenon headlights, multi-function steering wheel, automatic tailgate opening, leather interior, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, Porsche Communication Management satellite navigation with seven-inch touch-screen, Digital radio, eight-way powered front seat adjustment, front and rear electric windows and a three-year warranty all as standard. Fitted to every Panamera is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard. Customers will also get a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.
The car will make its public debut at The Shanghai Motor Show on Sunday 21 April and be available to order from Porsche Centres from July 2013.
A new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 will also be on offer in the Panamera S and Panamera 4S.
