UK production of Qashqai begins

Production of Nissan’s new Qashqai model begins this week at the manufacturer’s factory in Sunderland.

The vehicle is equipped with a "state of the art" two-litre dCi engine, which is capable of delivering 150hp as well as a fuel economy figure of 42.8mpg and carbon emissions of 174g/km.

This unit is expected to be the most popular choice among buyers and feature in over 25 per cent of all Qashqais sold.

According to Nissan, the engine is fun to use and powerful but also "smooth, refined and environmentally-friendly".

It is also unusual for a number of reasons, firstly through its use of six-speed automatic transmission. The engine also places acoustics as a priority, with an aluminium bedplate designed to absorb vibrations and reduce noise, particularly at high speeds.

Nissan’s Qashqai has been on sale for two months across Europe and has already taken an "impressive number" of orders, with the majority for the two-wheel drive version.

"This is in-line with Nissan’s expectation that customers would recognise that it offers a true alternative to the traditional compact family car," the automaker said.
