Mitsubishi enhances work on cutting emissions

Japanese car maker Mitsubishi has said that it is further pursuing its work on cutting its products’ carbon emissions by bringing forward the introduction of a new engine.

The two-litre diesel unit’s release will be brought forward by a year, the manufacturer said.

Currently in development, the advanced powerplant will now be introduced in 2009 in response to growing demand for environmentally-friendly options in Europe.

"Bringing forward the market introduction of this next-generation diesel engine will allow the company to meet the needs of the growing number of environment-conscious customers," Mitsubishi said.

Among the innovations that will reportedly enable the engine to deliver performance as well as low emissions is a high-efficiency turbocharger and similarly effective combustion characteristics.

The new engine will be positioned alongside Mitsubishi’s electric vehicle technology as part of the automaker’s environment initiative programme, to be launched in 2010.
