Mercedes C180 Upgrade First Look

Mercedes are taking the fight to the new BMW 3-Series with an updated trim for its 2013 C180.

The C180 will house a turbocharged, 1.6-litre direct-injection petrol engine providing 152bhp. In terms of mpg, expect both saloon and estate to deliver returns around 47mpg while the coupe (unlike the saloon/estate, continuing to offer Mercedes’ 3.5litre V6 petrol engine) will give a slightly more indulgent 41mpg.

Mercedes’ entry level Executive SE trim provides a new, elegant sports grille, 16-inch alloys, and LED lights. If you’d like to dig a little deeper, the £2000 Luxury Package (which replaces Mercedes’ ‘Elegance’) provides triple-louvre grille and a bonnet-mounted badge, 17-inch alloys, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, folding ext. door mirrors and that all important chrome trim.

Sport is split into two classes: AMG Sport and AMG Sport Plus. AMG Sport features 17-inch AMG wheels and halogens. A little puzzlingly, the AMG trims offer better C02 figures, positively affecting company car tax. Add the Plus and (for £1,000), you’ll get 18-inch bi-colour alloys, bi-xenon lights, AMG sports seats, contrasted upholstery and red seat belts. Other cosmetics include AMG floor mats with red edging and silver gearshift paddles on the autos.

There’s also the Mercedes’ AMG Handling Package (£530) which improves on steering, engine, exhaust and transmission.

All purchasers of the C-Class will also receive eCall, a system which alerts Mercedes-Benz call centre with your location details in the event of an emergency.
