Used Mercedes dealers could soon be seeing the marque’s most environmentally friendly vehicle in the UK.
The company has said it is considering testing the US market’s interest in a car that would be powered by compressed natural gas and if the tests prove to be a hit with consumers, the car could be exported around the world.
While the manufacturer has not made any firm commitment to the project, William Craven, general manager of regulatory affairs at Mercedes’ parent company, Daimler, said the firm was considering launching a green B-class model.
"We’re testing the market," he said.
At present, the majority of natural gas vehicles are restricted to fleet use, but Mercedes’ plans would open up the market to individuals.
Used Mercedes dealers could benefit from the move if it proves to be successful, as it could help to boost demand for the Mercedes brand.
Mercedes is currently displaying its B-Class CNG model at the Washington Auto Show.
