The ever-popular Mazda MX-5 has won the ‘Best Roadster’ prize in the 2008 Auto Express Used Car Honours.
The award for the sportscar, a favourite in the used car market, followed on from last month’s ‘Best Convertible’ award, reaffirming the MX-5’s popularity 18 years after it arrived on Britain’s roads.
A panel of six used car experts assessed the calibre of dozens of cars in 16 different categories before deciding on the Mazda as the winner.
Praising the timeless appeal of the MX-5, British Car Auctions general manager Andy Feldham, a member of the judging panel, said: "In 1989, Mazda took everything that made the British Lotus Elan great, then added superb reliability and a low price to the package.
"Not only is the MX-5 the world’s best-selling sportscar, it has also won over us loyal Brits."
Around 90,000 MX-5s have been sold in the UK since the car’s launch in 1990. One of the latest models, the MX-5 Roadster Coupe, features the world’s fastest-folding hard-top roof, which will open or close in just 12 seconds.
