Lamborghini to Launch ‘Cheap’ SUV

1

Whispers surrounding Lamborghini’s ‘Urus’ project are growing. Apparently, the Bologna-based car company’s new SUV will be launched in 2016 and become the cheapest car in the Lamborghini range.

Lamborghini are hoping that their new (big) baby, shown at the Beijing Motor Show earlier this year, establishes the brand more deeply amongst households looking for a performance primary car. It’s a move which fixes its gaze firmly on Range Rover’s dominance of the luxury SUV sector.

It is being mooted that the Urus design owes much to the likes of the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and Bentley Falcon.

However, Lambo’s (surely temporary) move away from Supercar territory is more inspired by the company’s Estoque project, the four-door concept car built by Lamborghini and shown at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.

Whispers on the Urus’ build include talk of a forced-air V8 engine and, thanks to other members of the VW Group Audi, some form of e-tron derivative. The company hope to create ‘best-in-class’ C02 emissions.

To maintain Lamborghini speed and handling the Urus will be built from carbon fibre composite materials formed in-house, saving around 250 pounds against the same metal model. That lighter frame will enjoy an impressive 600 hp. New 24-inch wheels sport a double-spoke design and are forged from matte-finish aluminium.

The lightness will be echoed in the internal build – the Urus interior is finished in carbon fibre reinforced polymer.

In a neat bit of tech, instead of conventional mirrors, small cameras will monitor traffic behind the vehicle and display on two TFT screens in front of the driver. Neat.

Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini commented:

“The Urus is a very concrete idea for the future of Lamborghini – as a third model line and as the perfect complement to our super sports cars. SUVs stand for freedom and emotion. SUVs make up one of the most successful market segments worldwide. The Urus is the most extreme interpretation of the SUV idea; it is the Lamborghini of the SUVs.”

The new Urus SUV will cost around £135,000 and Lamborghini are hoping to shift around 3,000 units per year with half of those units being sold in the US.

In case you were wondering, Urus is a large, wild ancestor of domestic bull. Make up your own joke here.
