Brighton-based British engineers have created a car seat that, in the event of an accident, cocoons baby in a protective shell. It’s called ‘The Carkoon’, expected to retail at £499 and is just about the cleverest thing you’ll see today.
The Carkoon’s main features is an airbag which folds out on impact. But instead of deflating, it provides a cushion rigid enough to withstand flying objects such as a stray water bottle or satnav – which can kill even in a 30mph crash.
It’s fireproof, providing a trapped child with up to 20 minutes of air, and even contains a device that sends a signal to emergency services alerting them to an accident with a baby involved.
