The ‘clean car’ sector is the fastest growing in the automotive industry, with sales doubling in the past 12 months, according to Honda.
Sales in the hybrid sub-sector have reportedly increased from 3,117 to 6,568 units, a 111 per cent rise, in the year to date.
The performance of Honda in particular is indicative of the expansion of the market, with 604 low-emission Civic Hybrid saloons registered in May, bringing total sales to 1,136 for the year to date.
One particular organisation that has recognised the quality of Honda’s hybrid vehicles is the City Car Club, a car-sharing scheme based in Camden, which has ordered 45 petrol-electric models for its clients to use.
"The Civic Hybrid matches the lifestyle of our users," said Dirk van Dijl, chief executive of the club.
"It’s easy to drive, it’s fun and it’s got all the bells and whistles – our guys especially like the space-age dashboard."
Honda will be participating in the Revolve Eco Rally, a car run from London to Brighton that aims to raise awareness of alternative motoring technologies, on June 5th.
