Honda plant reopens at half capacity

The production of vehicles including the Honda Civic is to resume at a plant in Swindon following a temporary closure, it has been revealed.

After being shut down for four months, the Honda plant is to resume production at half capacity following the positive moves to reduce stock levels at the venue.

New machinery has also been added to the plant to ensure that production is faster and more efficient, with work expected to begin on the upcoming Honda Jazz in the autumn.

Some 1,300 members of staff have taken voluntary redundancy from the plant, leaving a total workforce of about 3,400.

Meanwhile, pay cuts have been agreed upon by the remaining workforce for the next ten months.

David Hodgetts, director of manufacturing at Honda UK, said: "We’ll only be working about 50 per cent of our full capacity.

"We have tried our best to protect jobs. There’s been no compulsory redundancies at all at Honda and that’s the biggest objective we had throughout this period."

The Honda Civic is available to motorists in both three and five door forms in colours including Deep Sapphire Blue and Alabaster Silver.
