Sharp turning?

VCARS.co.uk driver Tom Sharp embarks on what could be the most important weekend of his driving career this weekend as Round Nine of the Ginetta GT SuperCup descends on Silverstone Race Track.

21-year old Sharp has dominated the Ginetta GT SuperCup since the opening weekend at Brands Hatch back in March of this year. Sharp has led the standings after mature performances at Donington Park, Thruxton, Oulton, Croft, Snetterton and Knockhill. However, a difficult weekend in late September, at Rockingham, has seen the long-time leader’s margin at the top of the Ginetta standings severely cut by veteran Carl Breeze.

This weekend will see Sharp, Breeze and third placed Tom Ingram go head-to-head-to-head over two races. While nothing can be ultimately decided (with a concluding three-race meet at Brands Hatch set for October 20th), Silverstone could prove highly influential in the destination of this year’s crown.

Sharp told VCARS:

“Look, it’s not perfect that my lead has been cut to such a narrow margin, but now is the time for me to prove I’ve got what it takes to be a champion. I’ve held the Championship lead from Round One because I believe in what I’m doing and what my team is doing – I haven’t suddenly become a bad driver and my team have not suddenly become poor at what they do. I know we have the speed we need to win the Ginetta GT SuperCup Championship.”

Tom continued:

“Carl has been around the block more times than anyone and Tom is looking for this third Ginetta Championship in three seasons and I know they’ll push me every inch of the way. But, if I have to win by just an inch, so be it. I can’t really afford to finish second and, in all honesty, that really suits my driving style. I’ll dearly want to win this season’s Championship and I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure that happens.”
