Three out of four Brits ‘think they are good drivers’

New research conducted by Axa insurance has found that three out of four Brits think they are good drivers.

Such is our self belief that 64 per cent of us think a British driver is safer than other European drivers.

Other statistics explain why we are so confident. The UK has one of the lowest rates of deaths on the roads with 5.4 people per 10,000 being killed on the roads – only Switzerland has a better rate.

[NEW LINE]More than nine out of ten (92 per cent) of Brits believe that using a mobile phone while at the wheel of a car is dangerous, compared with an average of 85 per cent across the rest of Europe.

These figures were repeated when the poll examined attitudes to drink-driving.

Tina Shortle, marketing director at swiftcover.com, commented: "It is clear that British drivers put safety higher up on the agenda when driving compared to their European neighbours."

She added: "It seems that the drivers surveyed would welcome greater automated controls inside the car to ensure roads are even safer in the future."
