Should your driving instructor teach for free?

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Fraud & Integrity Team (FIT) is cracking down on illegal driving instructors who are not on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors.

All registered, legal driving instructors should have a green badge to display on their windscreen which will have a photograph as a part of the certificate.

Pink badge holders are trainee driving instructors who are gaining enough experience to apply to be examined to be included on the register.

The DSA’s deputy head of Fraud and Integrity[FIT], Michelle Moston, said: "If illegal instructors are on our roads they have not passed the agency’s rigorous three-part test to ensure that they are meeting the highest standards of safety.

"This puts all our lives at risk. The FIT team is doing all it can, but we do need your help. To prove the offence of providing illegal instruction under Section 123 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, we need to have evidence that money (or money’s worth) has been exchanged."

The FIT team is currently investigating 400 instructors who are suspected to be teaching illegally.
