New course to educate foreign motorists

A driving programme for people who are not familiar with British roads has been set up by a risk management firm.

The course from Peak Performance includes an eyesight test and practical assessment, as well as UK traffic environment information for motorists.

It is estimated that 10,000 heavy goods vehicles from Europe operate on British roads every day and the Association of British Insurers states 18,000 were involved in UK accidents last year.

Peak Performance’s sales and marketing director Suzanne Linturn commented that this is resulting in a number of foreign workers taking to highways.

"Differences in driving practices, signs and speed limits between the UK and the countries from which these people come can give rise to problems," said the official.

This comes as Road Transport reports that officials in Devon have rejected calls to install duel language road signs along highways in the region.
