Fuel-efficient diesels ‘take record registration share’

The number of fuel-efficient diesel vehicles sold in the UK last year was a record, it has been announced.

According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), some 967,436 of the vehicles were sold in 2007 – a 40.2 per cent share of the market.

The entire small car diesel industry recorded a 2.5 per cent increase on 12 months previous, taking the total amount picked up by customers to 2.4 million units.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, commented that crises like rising fuel prices and US credit problems have hardly affected demand.

"The UK economy currently remains resilient and the new car market is ultra-competitive. Car makers will continue to fight hard for every sale and consumers will benefit from unprecedented choice and excellent deals," remarked the official.

The SMMT represents the trade interests of the motoring industry in the UK.
