Football licence plate sells for record amount

A licence plate bearing the name of a Premier League football team has been sold for a record-breaking amount.

Some £57,000 was made at auction for the WE57 HAM moniker at the DVLA Personalised Registrations sales in Bishop’s Stortford.

The amount supersedes the £36,000 a die-hard fan paid to attach the number plate AR53 NAL in 2004, delighting Damian Lawson, marketing manager for the registrations firm.

He said that the atmosphere in the room rivalled that of a cup final between hated rivals.

"The fans bidding showed the same passion they do on the terraces and we could only watch as the price kept on rising and rising," said the official.

West Ham fans may be top of the personalised plate league, but they would much sooner take the Gunners position in the Premier League.

The north London side are on top following a 1-1 draw with Liverpool over the weekend.
