Drivers warned to check oil regularly

Almost a third of drivers in Britain are risking damage to their engines by failing to check oil properly, according to a new study.

Some 29 per cent of respondents to a survey by car care company Comma said that they were not aware that oil levels should be checked on a level surface and 71 per cent were oblivious to the importance of using the right grade of motor oil in their engine.

Failing to check oil levels on an even surface can lead to inaccurate readings, potentially leaving a car with an inappropriate amount of oil.

Engines that are not sufficiently lubricated and protected can sustain damage as components grind against one another.

Using the wrong type of oil can also damage an engine, as the lubricant could be of the wrong consistency and cause the engine to run inefficiently.

Comma advises drivers to carry out regular checks on their vehicles and monitor oil levels, tyre condition, fluid levels and all bulbs.
