British car owners are being urged to check the fine print of their motor insurance policies and make certain their vehicle is covered for flood damage.
Following a month of heavy rain across the country, price comparison site gocompare.com has estimated that up to one in three motorists are not fully insured for this eventuality – meaning they could face a big payout if their car is damaged or written off by the water.
In addition, the company also suggested that car owners make plans to move their vehicle if flood warnings have been issued in the area, as some policies will not cover the repair bills caused by flooding.
"Only those with a comprehensive motor insurance policy will be able to claim for flood damage on their car insurance," said gocompare.com’s managing director Hayley Parsons.
The insurance sector has previously estimated the overall flood damage to total more than £1.5 billion.
