Defective wheels have been blamed for a number of deaths and injuries on highways in Hertfordshire.
According to the local constabulary, an improperly-developed tyre ranks alongside speeding, drink-driving, illness and fatigue as one of the road’s top dangers.
The strategic road policing inspector for the body David Partridge commented that a lot of people may find it "surprising" to see defective wheels "play such a significant part of road safety".
He added that the constabulary is running a road safety drive this month in order to raise awareness of the problem.
"I hope that our campaign will encourage them to make checking their tyres an essential part of their vehicle maintenance routine," said the official.
Last month TyreSafe operated Tyre Safety Month, which it claimed on its website was a big success.
It added that more than 3,500 people visited the domain in order to pick up information.
