Austin Allegro ‘wins’ Britain’s worst-ever car title

The Austin Allegro has spluttered over the finishing line to win the race to be declared Britain’s worst-ever car.

Its critics, of whom there seem to be many, will say that it is likely to be the only race this so-called 70s rust bucket is ever likely to win.

Brand new digital motoring magazine iMotormag.co.uk conducted the poll to find out the dislikes of 4,000 British drivers with the Morris Ital confirming its reputation for always being second-best by finishing as runner-up to the Allegro with 23.4 per cent of the vote.

The Austin Princess was considered a right royal design farce and came fourth in the poll. EastEnders’ Dr Legg sparked a brief revival for the Princess in the 80s by driving one to conduct his Albert Square rounds.

The Triumph Acclaim won dis-honourable mention in seventh place. iMotormag pointed out that it was the last car to be produced under the Triumph marque, which was "possibly for the best".

Although it gained pole position in the poll, it is worth remembering that there are still 1,000 Allegros registered in the UK, perhaps inspired by the way the 1970s British Leyland model has had starring roles in TV classics such as The Professionals, The Sweeney and Little Britain.
