Ford claims to have demonstrated how a road speed limiter (RSL) can reduce automobiles’ emissions and also lower costs for drivers.
Taking a Transit 260 or 280S with a 2.2-litre engine as an example, Ford claims that limiting speed to 10mph below the speed limit can achieve a 19 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and a similar cut in carbon emissions.
If speed is capped at 65mph, the manufacturer claims that a fuel saving of more than ten per cent at cruising speeds can be achieved, as well as a ten per cent reduction in emissions.
On Transit Jumbo models, 13 per cent less fuel can be used at cruising speeds if top speed is limited to 60mph, according to Ford.
Kevin Griffin, Ford’s fleet operations director, said: "Many operators have been asking us about achievable ways of limiting their impact on the environment as well as reducing costs.
"For operations on which maximum motorway speed is not a critical factor, we believe use of RSLs to be one of the most cost-effective approaches."
Speed limiters are currently available as factory-fitted options on all Ford Transit diesel models.
