Under a new law, drivers and motorcyclists must carry two breathalyser kits or face a fine of eleven euros. UK drivers also need to be aware – from November 1 all drivers, including foreigners, must carry the kit. The French government hope to save 500 lives per year with the new initiative. The government believe that allowing drivers to test their own alcohol limits before driving will enforce a re-education of French motorists and motorcyclists.
Motorists will have to pay £3 for a cheap system (available upon leaving the Calais ferry) or a £100 digital version. The French drink-driving limit is 50mg alcohol per 100ml blood. The UK’s is 80mg.
