One of the most appealing cars on Britain’s roads, the third-generation Audi A3 is synonymous with style, sophistication and, as the ‘vorsprung durch technik’ catchphrase suggests, German precision and attention to detail. The A3 was already a winner but with its 2009 facelift, it’s even better, attracting great reviews across the board. But, just how great is it? And should you consider buying one when you change cars? To help you answer these questions, we’ve picked the 2009 Audi A3 as our ‘car of the week’.
The most striking aspect of the A3’s upgraded styling is the sleek and flowing bodyline, giving the car a sporty look that is emphasised by aluminium detailing. Up front, the four-ringed Audi logo dominates a huge, purposeful grille, giving the car a really impressive and distinctive appearance.
Inside, the styling is equally impressive. The interior benefited from a complete makeover, giving the feel of a much more upmarket car with clear instruments, logical controls and a very comfortable and natural driving position. It has a top-quality interior feel with a design that’s easy on the eye.
The Audi A3 offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines which are smooth and sweet while delivering the kind of performance you would expect from an Audi. The model we feature here is powered by the new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which is both economical and refined, with plenty of torque. While being perfect for motorway cruising it also offers a sure-footed drive on country roads, as well as being sufficiently docile to potter about town.
The cabin of the A3 is spacious especially for the driver and front passenger. However there is comfortably enough room for two adults in the back but if you want extra space then go for the A3 Sportback version which has a longer wheelbase. The boot is more than adequate for family luggage, camping trips, golf clubs, or the weekly shopping outings.
This particular model, finished in grey, was registered in 2009 and has only covered 47,000 miles from new. With a cream cloth interior, the car is immaculate, and comes equipped with air conditioning, rear parking sensors, 16” alloy wheels and a multifunctional steering wheel.
