Zafiras are some of the most practical cars available, and a market leader in the people carrier class. It's no wonder then that they've consistently been in demand in both the new and used car market.

The Zafira is big on space, boasting a maximum of seven seats, almost all of which fold down to open up extra luggage room. This ingenious system - labelled the Flex7 system - means that with the maximum number of seats folded down, there is about 1,820 litres of storage area. This makes the Zafira both spacious and versatile and so it is ideal for use as a family car and a van.

Cars this large aren't generally considered to be brisk or manoeuvrable, but the Zafira offers a swift ride, which means that if you're in a rush it can handle speeds a little higher than its size would suggest. The earlier models are a little more bulky, but the later generations offer a particularly good drive and performance.

There are a range of engine options, ranging from a simple 1.6 at one end of the scale, to the substantially more powerful Zafira VXR (which boasts 237bhp), at the other. More of a compromise is the 1.8 litre petrol model, which offers a fair amount of power without being uneconomical to run. The most economical of the range however, is the 1.7 CDTi EcoFlex, which returns around 55mpg and 130g/km CO2 emissions. The rest of the range offers reasonable running costs considering their size, with the 1.8 litre petrol model emitting 168g/km of CO2 and returning 39.2mpg.

Vauxhall have more recently launched a more premium and sleek model in the form of the Zafira Tourer. With the redesign based primarily on making the car more modern and more luxurious, the price is understandably higher.

While there are concerns that the standard model is now dated - particularly in terms of style - it is still one of the best cars on the market in its class. Being slightly dated in fact puts them into an advantageous position when shopping for a used model.

The Vauxhall Zafira has been a consistently popular choice among families, looking for a spacious, reliable car.

Here's a short overview of the Vauxhall Zafira's history, starting in 1999.

  • The very first Vauxhall Zafira (Zafira A), based on the same platform as the Vauxhall Astra, was launched in 1999.
  • Introduced in 2001 in Geneva, a turbocharged Zafira (Zafira OPC) became the fastest minivan available in Europe, managing 0-62mph in just 8.2 seconds.
  • In 2002 the Zafira was just outside the top ten best selling cars in the UK, and was one of the most popular cars of its size on the market.
  • In 2005 the Zafira B was launched, which despite offering a smaller range of engine size than its predecessor, proved to be more popular.
  • The Zafira was named the tenth best selling car in the UK in 2006, and was the very first MPV to be placed within the top ten.
  • A new model of Zafira (Zafira Tourer C) was unveiled in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but it is sold alongside the Zafira B.

Zafiras have a good reputation in terms of reliability, but keep an eye out for a few of these points and you can be certain of picking up a good car.

  • Be sure to inspect the outside of the car thoroughly, especially checking the underside corners of the bumpers. These are known to get damaged on high curbs.
  • A faulty tailgate mechanism has proved to be a recurring problem - often in cold weather. Make sure to test this when conducting a thorough exterior check of the car.
  • As they are primarily family vehicles, make sure you check the interior for any noticeable signs of wear and tear from overenthusiastic children.
  • Electrical issues too can be common. Once inside the car check the interior lights, horn and air conditioning are working properly.
  • Zafiras tend to require a lot of oil, so look for signs that the previous owner has been thorough with oil replenishment. Any sign of a smoking exhaust would indicate that they haven't been.
  • Zafira spare wheels are notoriously targeted by thieves. It's worth checking your Zafira still has one; they are mounted under the back of the car, behind the rear axle.
  • Check the brakes - particularly the rear brakes - by jacking up the car and spinning the wheels by hand. Any resistance means they are in need of some TLC.
