Vauxhall Meriva

Expert Opinion

First appearing in 2002 as an Opel, the Meriva mini MPV offers much of a Zafira's flexibility in a five (as opposed to a seven) seat format. Look out for the Meriva A (02-10) and Meriva B (10-), the latter of which, as you would expect, has a slightly more modern, expressive look. The Meriva B is a slight improvement on the A, offering a longer body, improved suspension and higher quality controls. The B also includes doors that swing open like an innovative Narnian wardrobe, offering a wealth of magical storage and a dashboard of technical wizardry. Good insurance, low fuel consumption and cost-effective servicing make the Meriva an extremely viable car for families looking for innovation and comfort that doesn't break the bank.... Read More

VCARS.co.uk Vauxhall MerivaBack to top

The Vauxhall Meriva was first launched in 2002 to follow its bigger sister the Zafira, and has since developed a reputation for being one of the most practical and spacious cars of its class.
Due to its practicality, it is one of the most popular family cars available, and is a mix of space and affordability. Now into its second generation, it has been at the forefront of creating and developing the small-MPV market it is part of.

Why buy a Meriva?Back to top

Vauxhall Merivas are versatile and practical cars.

The Meriva was launched in 2002 as a slightly smaller car than its sibling the Vauxhall Zafira, and together they make up some of the most practical and clever cars in their respective classes. While the Meriva doesn't boast the same space as the Zafira, it is spacious and economical for a car of its size.

The key feature of the Meriva is undoubtedly its space. The full range, like the Zafira, include the ingenious FlexSpace seating system which allows the five interior seats to be shifted and remodelled, making the maximum amount of space available either for passengers, driver or luggage (luggage space with all seats folded down is around the impressive 1500 litre mark). This makes it an ideal choice for a suburban family car, but with clever features like independent radio/CD players in the front and back, it is also very well suited to long distance travel.

The second generation cars have taken the Flex technology a step further, introducing FlexDoors (suicide doors), which allow for greater space when loading into the car; particularly for things like installing child seats. While elsewhere the design may not be on the cutting edge visually, its clever practicality stands out above all else.

Performance options are good across the range, with the newer models offering smaller engines than its predecessor, including one regular and two turbocharged 1.4 litre petrol engines and two diesels (1.3 and 1.7 litres).

Ride may not be the most thrilling in the Meriva, but for a small family car it offers enough to remain interesting. There is a fair amount of body roll on the newer models which limits the vigour one might put into their daily commute, but with its practicality and the option of the 1.3 litre diesel equipped with Ecoflex returning around 60mpg, the sacrifice may well be worth it for some.

Merivas are well equipped, but only if you are willing to pay for the extras. This does however, allow you the option of tailoring a car to your needs and avoiding any unnecessary extras.

 Meriva

The Vauxhall Meriva was first unveiled in 2002, and like its bigger sibling the Zafira, it has proved to be popular in the small family car market.

Here is a brief overview of the Vauxhall Meriva, starting in 2002.

  • The Vauxhall Meriva was first launched in 2002, following on from its bigger sibling the Vauxhall Zafira.
  • The Meriva was given a facelift in 2006, with both front and rear ends being redesigned.
  • Over the first six years of the Meriva's life it sold over 110,000 in the UK alone.
  • The second generation Meriva was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, and features a sleeker design (including innovative FlexDoors) and some performance enhancements.
  • In 2011 the Meriva comes third in the European Car of the Year awards, receiving just thirteen points less than the winner, the Nissan Leaf.
  • Stop/start technology was added to some Meriva engines in 2011, making them more efficient.

What should I look for when buying a Meriva?Back to top

Here are a few of the most common complaints owners find on Vauxhall Merivas. Make sure to check for these and it should increase your chances of finding a bargain.

  • Check the exterior of the car, looking for rust and corrosion. Also take time to check that all lights and indicators are working. Indicator failure is a common complaint, so make sure that any Meriva you are looking at has fully functioning indicators.
  • Check that the boot opens and closes properly. Some Merivas have had faulty boot release micro switches which have needed to be replaced.
  • Some owners have complained of water leaking into the boot, so check for any damp patches inside to see if this is the case on your car.
  • In the first generation Merivas check to see that cam belts (some models have timing chains), have been changed on schedule - this should be within four years or 40,000 miles. If not this could fail and require costly repair work.
  • Problems with the power steering is fairly common in Merivas. Take it out for a test drive and check to see whether the steering is heavy in either direction; if there is a temporary loss of steering; if it pulls to one side; or if there is a power steering light up on the dashboard. This would all indicate steering problems and should be dealt with immediately.
