Expert Opinion

Although Toyota have consistently marketed the Yaris towards an increasingly younger audience, it is in fact older, more mature drivers who have taken to it most enthusiastically. Incredibly reliable and efficient (the recent generation's 1.4 D4-D diesel returns 72.4mpg and emits just 104g/km CO2), it's no surprise that it has found favour with those looking for dependability. Yet, while it might not be something you want to take to a Halfords car park to do doughnuts in, its deft handling and responsive steering make it a surprisingly nimble and fun car to drive.

Toyota Yaris Back to top

Launched in 1999, the Toyota Yaris was a quick success, finding acclaim with its unique style, exciting ride and abundance of space. Having been named European Car of the Year in 2000, it is now in its third generation, and is still one of the most economic and practical cars in its class.
While it may have fallen behind its rivals in the supermini market in some aspects, it continues to develop, capitalising on its ability to offer more space and better efficiency than many in its class.

Why buy a Yaris? Back to top

The Toyota Yaris range is efficient and practical.

Although arguably first released to the full spectrum of drivers, today's Yaris is a car primarily owned by more mature, older motorists. Run costs are low and the ride is still nimble, but its looks and practicality suggest it is growing ever more refined since first being released at the turn of the millennium.

Today the Yaris' strengths lie in its overall practicality - both in the fact that it is economical to run and buy, and that it boasts a decent amount of space considering it is a relatively small car. Run costs are kept low in a small selection of frugal engines - two petrols (1.0 and 1.33), and one diesel (1.4) in the latest generation. There is a hybrid model which offers greater efficiency, but otherwise the diesel serves up the best run costs, and achieves 72.4mph and emits 104g/km. The petrol options are also good for their class, with the 1.33 litre returning 52.3mpg and 123g/km CO2 emissions. Along with a slow depreciation, this stands the Yaris as one of the most frugal cars in its class - although not necessarily the market leader.

Another of the Yaris' strongest assets is its space, which is designed in line with the ethos of "spacious inside, compact out". Few other superminis offer the same passenger space, which provides plenty of room for four adults to travel comfortably. Luggage space at 272 litres in the third generation isn't market leading, but can be extended up to 363 litres when the rear seats are slid into their forward position.

The Yaris was first marketed on the strength of its ride and handling, but the past decade has arguably seen little change, and while it is still nimble and light around town and very easy to control, it offers minimal feedback and has a more indifferent drive than some of its rivals.

With an excellent safety and reliability rating - as is uniform in Toyotas - the Yaris is one of the best superminis in terms of affordability, practicality and reliability. While that might not offer enough excitement for everyone's tastes, there's little to find fault with.

Toyota Yaris

The Yaris was first launched in 1999, and is today one of the leading Toyotas on the market.

Here's a short overview of the Yaris' history, starting in 1999.

  • The first Toyota Yaris was launched in 1999 in Europe, and was marketed under the Echo and Vitz name in Asia and North America.
  • A year after its release, the Yaris was named European Car of the Year, in 2000.
  • The second generation car was launched at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2006, and featured a range of new engine options including an RS model boasting a 1.8 litre engine.
  • The third generation Yaris was launched in 2010. This generation was remodelled to slightly to make it sportier, yet it came with a reduced range of engine options from its predecessors.
  • The 2,000,000th Yaris was produced at the Toyota manufacturing plant in Valenciennes, France in 2011.
  • The Toyota Yaris Hybrid was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and proved instantly popular.
  • The Yaris featured in the top ten most popular cars in Europe in 2012. It was the only car that year to record an increase in sales from its previous year.

What should I look for when buying a Yaris? Back to top

Being a Toyota, reliability is almost certain. Do make sure to look out for some of these commonly found problems, however.

  • Inspect the exterior of the car, making sure to check for any rust or corrosion. Also check for mismatched panels or paintwork, which could be a sign of past damage.
  • Check the tyres and alloys for any sign of degradation. Unevenly worn tyres could mean that the wheels are misaligned - commonly a symptom of kerbing on the Yaris.
  • Take the car out for a test drive and listen out for any knocks or noises coming from the suspension when driving over road bumps. This could be a sign of the anti roll bar bushes cracking; a problem reported on cars over four years old.
  • As they are generally very reliable, Yarises can often be left unattended to. When out on the road check that the oil light doesn't come on, which could be a sign of old oil and poor engine maintenance.
  • There have been reports of corroded brake discs on some models. Check that the brakes are in working order by lightly holding the wheel while stopping to see if the car pulls to one side.
