Creator of the first ever SUV, Jeep's roots are within the US army, where the first model was introduced as a utilitarian, rugged workhorse. That original Jeep is arguably far from what buyers want in a SUV these days however, and so the modern models are growing ever more sedate, comfortable and refined than their raw predecessors.

Jeep Overview

The Jeep range is still one of rugged, off road functionality however. The Wrangler, largely unchanged since its origins in the 50s, remains remarkably capable off road, but uncomfortable on it. The Grand Cherokee is more suited to life on tarmac - particularly the refined latest generation - but still manages to cope when taken adventuring. On the smaller side is the Compass, but even as a compact SUV it remains tough and hearty. A new Cherokee is to be released in 2014, which bears a distinctly modern look, and suggests that Jeep, despite inventing the SUV over half a century ago, is now struggling to keep up with their more modern rivals.
