BMW don't do things in halves, and so it should come as no surprise that their very first 4X4, the X5 (introduced in 1999), has become one of the leading models in the luxury SUV market. Stylish and sophisticated, it may not boast the same off-road ability as its Land Rover competitors, but BMW themselves admit that the X5's real assets are to be had on tarmac. Handling like a saloon car and with a smooth ride, it is luxurious and stylish, yet maintains a sporty edge which makes it a far more exciting on-road car than several of its rivals. New generations come with an added two seats in the boot, which boosts its credentials as a practical family car, but ultimately this is a driver's car.
