BMW 320

Expert Opinion

The best saloon in the world? It's difficult to disagree. The 320 has a top speed of almost 150mph, covers 0-60mph in less than eight seconds, offers over 60mpg and even has a very spacious boot. Most modern drivers will be eyeing the fourth (98-06) and fifth generation (05-12), two cars that, at launch, re-defined in-class driving pleasure while the Mercedes Benz C-Class and Audi A watched nervously on. Whether it's the petrol 320i, 325i, 330i or lightening quick 335i, the diesel 320d, 325d or 335d (again super quick), the rear-wheel drive beauties handle effortlessly thanks to extremely capable assisted steering technology. All in all, the 320 is a great drive and a great buy.... Read More

VCARS.co.uk BMW 320Back to top

The first BMW 320 was launched way back in 1975 along with its original 3 Series partners the 316 and 318. Since then it has blazed a trail of excellence which few other cars have been able to match.
A mix of quality, refinement, power, practicality and efficiency, there are few boxes that the 320 doesn't tick. This is undoubtedly a huge factor as to why it remains one of the most popular BMW models in production.

Why buy a 320?Back to top

The BMW 320 range offers market leading performance.

Having sold over 12 million since first being launched in 1975, the 3 Series has been hugely successful over its long history. More than a collection of impressive sales figures however, it is a benchmark for quality and refinement, not only across the rest of the BMW range, but across all cars in its class; especially the BMW 320, one of the most popular of the series.

What makes it a market leader is not necessarily excellence in one area, but rather in all. Ride and handling is class leading across the range, with each subsequent generation providing a better drive. Well weighted steering, a balanced chassis, good grip and low road noise all contribute to a ride which is smooth and comfortable yet sporty and exciting at the same time. It all factors in to make the 320, especially the latest generation 320d, almost unmatched in its driving experience.

Surprisingly, the 320 is also very economic to run. The 2012 320d's miles per gallon returns are around the high 50, low 60 mark, which make them incredibly economic considering their performance. This efficiency coupled with performance and ride has led the 320d to stand out as one of the top cars not only in the series, but in its class.

Space is good in the 320, as in the rest of the range. Earlier models offer slightly less than their later counterparts do, but across the range, space is good, both for passengers and luggage. In the later generation, boot space comes in at 480 litres, which nearly triples once the rear seats are folded down.

Sharing BMW's reliability and safety rating, the 320 remains a car at the pinnacle of its class. It does come with a relatively high price tag, but it is justified considering the returns, the cost of running and their good resale value.

 320

First launched in 1975, the BMW 320 has been a consistently popular car, famed for its mix of quality, performance and reliability.

Here is a short history of the BMW 320, beginning in 1975 when the first one was launched.

  • The first BMW 320 was unveiled in 1975, as part of the full 3 Series. To separate it from the 316 and 318 it came with dual headlights.
  • At the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show new variants were unveiled, including a 320/6, featuring a 2.0 litre M20 engine to replace the four cylinder 320.
  • In 1982 the E30, second generation 320, was launched, surprising many by coming with a price tag nearly double that of its predecessor.
  • The E36 was unveiled in 1990, featuring a Z-axle multilink rear suspension, with a coupé version being released the following year, and a cabriolet variety in 1992.
  • In 1992 the 3 Series was included on American motoring magazine Car and Driver magazine's list of the ten best cars of the year for the first time. It remained on this list right up until 2013.
  • 1998 saw the release of the E46 320, which was part of the supremely popular fourth generation 3 Series.
  • The E90 was launched in 2005, and was bigger and offered more space than its predecessor. That year the 3 Series was the tenth best selling car in the UK.
  • In 2006 the E90 was named as What Car? magazine's Car of the Year.
  • In 2012 the sixth generation F30 320 was launched and featured existing technology from the BMW 7 Series and the 5 Series. The 320d EfficientDynamics was the most widely used car at the London 2012 Olympics.
  • The 320d Touring model was named as the Family Car of the Year 2012 by Top Gear Magazine.

What should I look for when buying a 320?Back to top

Keep an eye out for a few of these commonly found problems to make sure you find a 320 in good condition.

  • Have a walk around the outside of the car looking for any noticeable rust or corrosion. Alloys on 3 Series are known to chip.
  • Check the tyres for excessive wear, which could be an indication that the wheels are not aligned properly.
  • Some 3 Series have had trouble with sticking door handles and noisy windscreen wiper motors, double check that these are working properly on any model you are looking at.
  • Once out on a test drive, check for brake problems - particularly a corroded brake pipe which is known to cause MOT failures on 3 Series.
  • Listen out for any knocks or unusual noises coming from the suspension when on the road. Lower control arm bushes are sometimes known to fail after just 30k miles, and any noise could be a sign of a problem.
  • There have been some complaints of clutch juddering in post 2003 320s. If this is the case it could mean the clutch needs to be replaced - a costly procedure.
  • Any blue smoke or sub-par performance in diesels could mean a problem with the turbo. This is often preceded by a whining sound coming from the car when driving.
  • Large engine BMWs tend to clock up big mileages, so be wary of any that seems suspiciously low. A full service history would be a good indication that all is okay.
  • BMWs are known for their reliability and the 320 are no different. Keep an eye out for some of these points and you should end up with a good, solid car.
