The Audi A4 range is refined, spacious and comfortable.

Like many Audis, the A4's strengths are that it is well put together, stylish and runs well. With one of the best cabins in its class, the A4 is a refined benchmark for quality in a hotly competitive class.

The Audi name is synonymous with comfort, particularly inside the car, and the A4 is no different. Spacious without being bulky, the passenger room is ample, while the boot space across the range is impressive. Particularly in the Avant estate, which offers an impressive 490 litres of room - 1430 with the seats folded down.

It follows the natural progression of engines being developed to offer more performance and less emissions in each generation. So, in the latest (fourth generation), the 2.0 TDi 136 emits 112g/km of CO2 and returns 65.7mpg fuel economy. Older models manage to remain competitive however, with the B6 second generation, 1.9 TDi SE model offering 49.6mpg - a respectable figure, especially for this class.

The 2.0 TDi, the top seller in the range, levels the good efficiency with a fair amount of power too, which in the mid-range 141bhp option pulls away with vigour, hitting 60mph in just over nine seconds. On the more brisk end of the scale are the petrol engines, of which the 2.0 TFSI - which uses the same engine as the Golf GTI - takes only six seconds to achieve 0-62mph.

Sharing the Audi's reputation for reliability, upkeep costs remain minimal, while being a popular fleet car means that there should be plenty of choice on the used market.

A4

The Audi A4 was first launched in 1994, and has found considerable success with its refinement, smooth ride and good looks.

Here's a short a history of the Audi A4, starting in 1994 when it was first launched.

  • The first Audi A4 - the B5 - was released in 1994 and was built using the Volkswagen Group B5 platform - the same used by the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat.
  • In 1996 the A4 came third in the European Car of the Year award, losing out to second place Peugeot 406, and the eventual winner, the Fiat Bravo.
  • In 1997 the B5 model received a facelift, and was revealed at that year's Frankfurt Motor Show. A 2.8 litre V6 engine was introduced, replacing the 2.8 12 valve.
  • In 1997 Audi became the first European manufacturer to put a hybrid into series production - the Audi duo - which was based on the A4 Avant B5. This series was limited to around 100 units.
  • The second generation A4 was launched in 2001 featuring revised styling and a number of additional engine options. This model was built on the Volkswagen Group B6 platform.
  • A revised A4 was launched in 2005, which revised the steering settings, suspension and engine offerings.
  • At the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show the B8 Audi A4 was unveiled. This model featured improved handling, a larger cabin and more luggage room - at the time the best in its class.

What should I look for when buying a A4?Back to top

Audis in general are reliable, solid cars. Make sure to have a look for some of these commonly found faults though, to be certain you spot a bargain.

  • Audi A4s have been known to wear out their wheel bearings fairly quickly, so when out on a test drive listen for any noises - such as a humming - coming from the wheels, which could mean the bearings need to be changed.
  • A number of A4s have suffered from faulty air conditioning units, so make sure that this is in working order throughout the car.
  • If you are inspecting an A4 with Xenon headlights, check to see that they are working properly and not flickering, or going out. If this is the case the full control unit may have to be changed - a sizeable job.
  • When starting the engine, listen for any humming noises lasting anywhere from five to ten seconds. If you hear this it could mean that your fuel filter will need to be replaced.
  • Listen for a whining noise when using the power steering. This could mean that the power steering fluid is running low and should be topped up. Ideally this should be topped up every 15,000 miles.
  • A4s manufactured before 2002 have reportedly suffered from ignition coil problems - especially turbocharged engines. A faulty ignition coil will most likely cause the engine to run roughly, so listen and feel for any harshness.
  • Check that the brake pedal does not feel stiff on any A4 you are inspecting. This could be a sign of the brake servo failing, which is often caused by blocked rain channels.
