Fuel economy BMW 320d saloon

I'm thinking of buying a BMW 320d, the manufacturer and a few dealers have quoted a very high MPG. But I'm not convinced. I've owned cars with a much smaller engine that didn't even reach this!

Have BMW really advanced with their fuel efficiency technology or does somebody have some truth to add to the matter?

I went though this recently. I got BMW 320d saloon 2010 Business Edition.
I especially went for 320d as it has more power than 318d, but it is not as bad at fuel efficiency as 325d.

I looked at couple of sources and I saw the following fuel consumption figures:
urban - 47.1 mpg
extra urban - 68.9 mpg
combined - 58.9 mpg
You can only dream about those number. I do mainly 15 mile trips and sometimes 3 minute journeys to the supermarket. On each tank I consistently get 49mpg-51mpg. That's what the trip computer says and that is quite accurate as I check that by doing my own calculation.

The best I got so far was 60mpg on 1.5h journey mainly on motorway.

Overall 50mpg is not bad, but is far away from what manufacturers says. They probably get 68.9 mpg on their track without using any electric equipment driving around for a few hours.

I have a 2010 320d coupe auto, best mpg on Motorway at 75mph is 56 on a long run or 50 on shorter (<100 mile) runs. Around town 40mpg is normal. My overall average at 68000miles is 46mpg, around 90% is motorway driving.
