Volkswagen (VW) has announced plans to roll out its BlueMotion programme across a number of its most popular models.

BlueMotion is a VW initiative aimed at improving engine efficiency and reducing vehicle emissions.

The car maker has used a combination of revised aerodynamics, optimised gear ratios, a new turbo-charger and hard compound tyres to improve the performance of the Polo.

It will now extend BlueMotion to its Golf, Golf Plus, Golf Estate, Jetta, Passat and Passat Estate.

"All Golf BlueMotion models are fitted with climatic air conditioning as standard as well as a multifunction display advising on the optimum moment to change gear," VW said.

"The comprehensive roster of standard safety equipment includes ABS with Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), a total of six airbags, Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) and ASR traction control."

Later this year the Polo BlueMotion and the Golf BlueMotion will enjoy an exemption from the London congestion charge as they are in VED bands A and B.
