One of the world’s most efficient cars fuelled by liquid is set to be launched by German automaker Volkswagen (VW).

The Polo BlueMotion will be trialled by members of pay-as-you-go car club Streetcar in 25 London locations before it rolls into dealerships.

According to VW, the model emits 99 g per km of carbon dioxide and consumes fuel at 74.3 mpg.

"The Polo is a highly efficient, practical and benchmark model and new BlueMotion products will enhance our choice to customers in future. Transport is changing and we recognise customers – particularly in cities – are seeking new mobility solutions," said Vincent Kinner, head of VW Fleet Services.

For 32 years the VW Polo has been in production, mainly as a hatchback but also as a saloon, coupe and estate vehicle.

It is sold mainly in Europe, although it has been available in most export markets.
