Although from the outside the new Volkswagen Golf looks virtually identical to other models in the range, it is under the bonnet where much is different, according to one reviewer.

Stewart Smith states in the Stirling Observer that the latest Golf GTI is the quickest ever in the range, thanks to a top speed of 149 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, its power can also be witnessed in terms of acceleration, as the vehicle can quicken to 62 miles per hour from standstill in 6.9 seconds.

Despite this additional power, Volkswagen has still managed to make the vehicle more environmentally-friendly, cutting CO2 emissions to 170g/km and increasing fuel efficiency to 38.7 miles to the gallon.

Mr Smith also highlighted that the vehicle had many other strong attributes, including supportive seats, head, leg and shoulder room aplenty and high build quality.

Overall, he classified the vehicle as a "quality product".

Volkswagen described the Golf GTI as a "true performance car" that also has "dynamic good looks" and a "superb cabin".
