Used cars can be more expensive than new models

Through using a Vauxhall Corsa as a guide, it has been uniquely determined that a motorist may currently be able to purchase a new car for a lower price than one that has been on the road for a year.

Research from Parkers.co.uk has discovered that for the first time in history motorists may find it cheaper to buy a new car, as dealers significantly reduce prices to try and instigate a sale.

Add this to the fact that demand for used cars remains strong and motorists have been put in an unfamiliar situation.

The research discovered that a motorist looking to buy a Vauxhall Corsa 1.0-litre Life model that has completed 5,160 miles on an 08 plate could pay around £6,494.

However, the same vehicle on an 09 plate that is yet to be driven off the forecourt can be purchased for £5,995.

Simon Harris, Parker’s consumer editor, said: "This will only be a temporary phenomenon in the market place.

"A used car is always worth less than a new one, so given time the market will correct itself."

Motorists contemplating buying a Vauxhall Corsa also have the added decision of which colour to plump for, with Flame Red and Glacier White among those on offer.
