Vauxhall has announced details of its new Antara, saying that the vehicle’s attributes and affordability are designed to tempt buyers away from larger SUVs.

According to the manufacturer, the Antara’s "stylish looks, high quality interior and massive level of standard equipment" could make owners of larger SUVs "start to think they’ve been short-changed".

The range’s entry level E model includes an electronic stability programme, ‘intelligent’ four-wheel drive, a descent control system, air conditioning, a remote-controlled ultrasonic alarm and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Moving up a level to the Antara S, this version will have 18-inch alloys, climate control, heated front seats, cruise control and self-levelling suspension.

The SE is the top of the range model and features DVD sat-nav, a six-disc CD player with mp3 capability, xenon headlamps, front and rear parking sensors and an on-board tyre pressure monitoring system.

In addition to its equipment, the Antara will also be "a great car to drive", according to Vauxhall, with speed-sensitive power steering and a sports chassis.

The model will be powered by a choice of a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine or a two-litre 16v diesel unit.

Vauxhall’s Antara is available to order now and will go on full sale in July.
