Kia’s chief designer Peter Schreyer has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Royal College of Art (RCA) in recognition of the contribution he has made to automotive design.

Italian creative firms Pininfarina and Giugiaro are the only other automotive designers to have received the honour from the RCA.

Mr Schreyer, who was behind Kia’s ex-Cee’d cabrio concept car and is responsible for the automaker’s future design direction, began his career with Audi in 1980.

He worked on the Audi TT and new Volkswagen Beetle before joining Kia in 2006. On June 29th he will receive his honorary doctorate alongside artist Tracey Emin and musician Brian Eno.

The Kia designer commented: "I am very proud and delighted to be honoured by the Royal College… This only serves to encourage me to produce the very best work of my career for Kia.

"Kia has given me the opportunity to shape its whole brand design and character and seldom does a designer have such a clean sheet to work with. We have started this journey with ex-Cee’d to show just where we might go and at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September I think we will surprise the entire automotive world with what we are planning for Kia’s future."
