Drivers travelling along the ‘Snake Pass’ – the 25 miles of the A57 between Sheffield and Glossop – can honk their horns in celebration today as it’s just been voted Britain’s best driving road.

A survey conducted by British sportscar manufacturer Caterham Cars found that 25 per cent of drivers nominated the stretch of road that twists across the Peak District like an exotic snake.

The road then rises (like a snake that’s been charmed) 512 metres above sea level, affording breathtaking views of dramatic scenery that will make you feel happy to pay your road tax.

The ‘Cat & Fiddle’ road from Macclesfield to Buxton finished a very close second and one person who voted for it summed up the feelings of many of his fellow drivers when he described it as "addictively technical but takes no prisoners".

It was slightly surprising that the A18 mountain section in the Isle of Man could only manage third place as it has no speed limit and is part of the famous TT course circuit.

The B4100 route from Warwick to Banbury, a fine alternative to the M40, also figured strongly in the poll.
