There might have been less drivers than normal on the M25 between junctions five and 21 this morning – it’s just been voted Britain’s worst driving road.

In a survey by British sportscar manufacturer Caterham Cars, it polled 31 per cent of the vote with one disgruntled poll participant angrily scrawling "the antithesis of driving" on his voting slip.

The M1 (all of it) attracted 21 per cent of nominations – perhaps for its ability to offer "continual roadwork views at a snail’s pace".

In bronze medal position was the entire stretch of the M1 and the M6 as it passes Birmingham, described as "a slow crawl past a grey town – especially bad on a Friday".

Fourth-placed A14 Cambridge to Peterborough seems to be another road to hell. One driver explained that this popular route for truckers is "accident-rich and heavily congested with average speed cameras".

Sales and marketing director for Caterham Cars Andy Noble, [remove comma] was keen to point out that not all roads are as bad as the lot mentioned above.

"Turn off from the beaten track and there are plenty of roads that remind us that driving is still a privilege," he said.
