Motorists are more likely to have an accident now that the winter months have drawn in, it has been claimed.

According to car insurer esure, the number of claims made by drivers in November 2006 was 130,000 more than one month earlier.

One tip that the firm gave motorists was to never apologise in the event of an accident, as it admits liability and could affect a policy.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure commented that "knowing what to do" if an accident occurs is important.

"As more wintry weather affects driving conditions and daylight hours shrink this month, the likelihood of being involved in a car accident is at its peak. Being prepared for the unexpected is crucial," he said.

Research this week from esure found that the price of petrol would have to almost double to £1.83 before motorists would be put off driving.
