New research has shown that the average principal in a new car showroom earns over £60,000 per annum.

The Auto Retail Industry Salary Survey for 2008 shows that with bonuses on top of a basic salary, the typical high-ranking sales official in the garage earns about £62,110 each year.

Recording figures for 20 different job types across nine regions, the report added that managers pick up a £44,719 average paycheck and technicians get £26,000.

Sue Robinson, director of the National Franchised Dealers Association, commented that this was good news for the sector.

"It shows the auto retail industry is a good career choice and means we can continue to attract high quality people to our dealerships. That means customer service levels … should continue to rise," she said.

In Ireland, Subaru dealership Peter Mooney Motors is to sponsor the Sligo Shopping Spree this year, according to Easier.

Rebecca Stevens, chief executive of the Sligo Chamber, said that this will help the town’s retail base, it added.
